How do you define success in life?

Doesn’t success mean achieving a desired outcome? That sounds simple enough, but whose desired outcome are we talking about? Surely you, my dear reader, would agree that we do not all want the same things—or pay the same price to get them.
For many of us, happiness is a measure of success. Can money make us happy? It certainly helps, doesn’t it? Paying the bills, putting food on the table, and having something left over takes away a lot of worry. There is satisfaction in supporting ourselves and comfort in knowing we have enough. Maybe success is peace of mind.
But success looks different depending on where we stand. Taking the field is success to the general. The privates pay the price. Those who give the orders and those who carry them out may feel very differently about the same victory.
In my own life, I measure success by what I gain and what it costs me. Am I happier? Can I enjoy what I worked for? Money provides security, but the life I spend earning it matters too.
I like to think success is a journey, with happiness as the goal. Let us enjoy the miracle of life along the way. When our time is over, what will we look back on and call success?
